Sam Nunes, AIA, successfully developed and implemented a non-hierarchical sociocratic governance structure that empowers and synthesizes diverse interests toward common purpose, a creative management model that enhances impact and ensures resiliency in architectural practice.

Fellows Feature Questions:
  1. Why did you apply for fellowship?
    I had been asked to apply for AIA fellowship many times over the past twenty years by our local AIA chapter but never really felt deserving of the honor. This year, i felt that I had achieved enough to apply.

  2. Where were you when you got the news you received it?
    At my desk in our San Francisco office, a place i had not seen very much of during the last two years of the COVID pandemic.

  3. How did you celebrate?
    A few of my partners were also in the office that day and we opened up a very nice bottle of wine and celebrated this achievement together.

  4. What’s your one piece of advice for those applying, or thinking of applying?
    It’s a strange thing to apply for recognition as an individual in a profession that is all about collaboration. Trust your colleagues and friends to help you better understand your personal role in the collective successes you all share in.

  5. What’s is your most favorite project you have worked on within your career?
    Microsoft Silicon Valley Campus. Deeply sustainable and an AIA Cote Award recipient, this project took a deep dive into the nature of the modern day work place the needs of the modern day worker.

  6. Who has inspired you most within your career?
    My partner Pauline Souza. She is relentless in her pursuit to do the most good for the most people – every day. Her efforts have inspired me to be a better architect.
