Welch Scholarship|

The California Architectural Foundation and AIA California are honored to announce the recipients of the 2022 Paul W. Welch, Jr. ARE Scholarship.

In recognition of Paul Welch, Jr.’s distinguished and lengthy career of service to architects and the architectural profession, this scholarship program was created to celebrate Paul’s experiences with the California Architects Board (CAB), as well as, with AIA California and his unwavering belief in the power of the architectural license. The scholarship recognizes the significant contributions of California interns at early stages in their careers and encourages them to complete the licensure process by covering all associated costs.

Paul W. Welch, Jr., Hon. AIA stated, “clearly, the country and the profession has been greatly impacted by the pandemic. Moreover, the workplace has been challenging and sometimes very uncertain for emerging professionals endeavoring to advance towards licensure. Complicating the discussions have been occasional articles and publications questioning the value and need for a license, and consistent efforts to increase flexibility in the workplace, and improve starting salaries in response to comparables with other professions and the heavy burdens of student loans. Consequently, the primary purpose of the Paul W. Welch, Jr. ARE Scholarship was designed to recognize the importance of licensure and to help ease the financial burden of licensure and incentivize emerging professionals to continue their efforts to become  architects.”

Joining Paul on the 2022 Jury were Mandy Freeland, AIA; Keelan Kaiser, FAIA; Rona Rothenberg, FAIA; and Chet Widom, FAIA. This year’s Jury discovered early on that their task was not an easy one. The submittals were extraordinary, and it was quite clear that while the workplace might be somewhat confused, meaningful employment was helping emerging professionals focus on critical practice issues and their essay responses and exhibits demonstrated articulate understandings of the architects’ role concerning stewardship of environmental challenges and helping a planet in environmental danger. The enthusiasm, dedication and passion for the profession was contagious, and the Jury was greatly impressed.
