The “type” of membership you have in the AIA depends on your licensure status and industry affiliation.

Licensed to practice in the US Architect (AIA) Join (copy of current license required)
Associate membership is open to individuals who meet one of the following criteria: professional degree in architecture; currently work under the supervision of an architect; currently enrolled in the Intern Development Program (IDP) and working toward licensure; or faculty member in a university program in architecture. Associate (Associate AIA) Join
Licensed to practice outside of the US International Associate (Int’l Assoc. AIA) Join
Allied membership is open to engineers, planners, landscape architects, sculptors, muralists, artists, and those in government, education, journalism, and manufacturing industry, and other fields allied to architecture. Applicants cannot be eligible for Architect, International Associate AIA or Associate AIA membership. Allied Join
