Energy-Efficient All-Electric Buildings: Case Studies of Three Building Types
April 14, 2021 | 12:00pm-1:30pm PT
Speaker: Edward Dean, FAIA, LEED AP BD+B, PhD
Ed Dean, FAIA will present Case Studies of All-electric buildings that have achieved Zero Net Energy and greatly reduced greenhouse gas emissions from operation. He will describe the goals and design intentions for each project, discuss design decisions the Architects made to achieve very deep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, and present measured post-occupancy performance data that supports the “zero” level of performance.
Mr. Dean will discuss tools, metrics, and modeling used by the design team in pursuit of the “zero” goal. He will highlight exemplary features of the various projects, discuss problems encountered, and lessons learned that can help other practitioners to achieve similar levels of performance in their own projects.
He will also discuss whether embodied carbon was considered in these projects and briefly consider current approaches to estimate embodied carbon and why this has become a key part of the definition of “zero” performance.
