How AIA California Reviews & Takes Positions on Legislation

Every year, thousands of bills are introduced by the California State Legislature, a good number of which will have an impact on the profession of Architecture in some form. As a result, AIA California staff review all bills introduced each session and identify those that may be of interest to AIA California members.

In order to arrive at official AIA California positions, the identified bills are then assigned to one of four subcommittees for review: Advocacy Advisory, Climate Action, Urban Design, and Housing. These committees—which consist of 40+ AIA California members who voluntarily give extensive time to these efforts—review these bills, and make recommendations to the Board on positions to take: Support; Oppose; Watch.

Upon further review, the Executive Committee and Board, issue official AIA California positions on any particular legislative session’s bill-set.
