Hope Village is a proposed urban development for formerly incarcerated individuals, the unhoused, and families affected by the justice system. It contains an extensive network of mental health and social services as well as community amenities, landscape, and open space. The proposal integrates 5 key principles creating a holistic, restorative environment for residents, clients, and the general public.
Remember
The history of Los Angeles is one of extraction and relocation of people for the benefit of industry and infrastructure. The proposal seeks to remember these stories and restore these connections. Hope Village will become a place for those in need, a home for those who have not, a center to provide resources to heal and prepare for a better future physically and mentally.
Reconnect
Hope Village is anchored within the belief that the purpose of urban design is to facilitate, enable, and enhance the qualities of inclusion and interconnection between diverse groups of people. Through this lens, the project will provide a restorative environment that becomes embedded within the civic consciousness of residents.
Resource
Central to the identity and core mission of Hope Village is providing an array of services to under-resourced communities across the Los Angeles Region that includes the unhoused and formerly incarcerated. At its essence, Hope Village is envisioned as a nexus of open-sourced, service providers: community interest groups, non-profits, cultural institutions, residents, and mission-based clients that establish a network of affiliations both within and beyond the site.
Restore
Architecture and design excellence play a key role in creating restorative, healing environments that lift people’s souls and demonstrate investment to typically under-resourced communities. Key to this is establishing principles that are anchored in the values of Choice, Community, and Comfort. These 3 tenets anchor a Trauma Informed Design Framework which prioritizes human experience to enhance personal control, dignity, connection, meaning, value, and safety. This holistic approach emphasizes the whole person, while providing critical services to people impacted the history of Los Angeles is one of extraction and relocation of people for the benefit of industry and infrastructure.
This project embodies great design and urban connectivity with a needed set of programs. It realizes excellent process, principles, and design for a future community. It does a lot of the right things.
