Reuse of an existing building is a great strategy for conservation of embodied energy/carbon. Historic preservation can serve as a model for identifying avoided carbon impacts through improved building use or adaptive reuse. New digital tools are emerging that allow for calculation of embodied carbon in support of adaptive use projects. This presentation will explore strategies and methods for calculating and comparing the energy/carbon dioxide emitted for building treatment options in support of the Framework for Design Excellence.
