The popularity of ADUs and diversity of types—stand-alone units, renovations to existing garages, and additions to homes—has led to alternative interpretations of building code by Building and Safety Departments in different California jurisdictions, creating obstacles in the design, permitting, construction, and inspection phases.
Recognizing challenges particular to electrical access and usage issue, and the varying panels, service, and electrical load requirements required by utility companies, AIA California engaged Redwood Energy to develop “ADU Electrical Service and Feeder Load Calculator.”
This technical publication assists qualified design professionals by providing the options for electrical service to ADUs, illuminates how to make the correct choices, and guides use of a corresponding “Live” Calculator.
