Maybeck Awards

The highest design award AIA California bestows on an individual architect, and named for Bernard Ralph Maybeck, the Maybeck Award recognizes outstanding achievement in architectural design as expressed in a body of work produced by an individual architect over a period of at least 10 years.

Past recipients include prominent architects whose work has shaped California and beyond: from 1995 recipient Raymond Kappe, FAIA; 1996 recipient Pierre Koenig, FAIA; to both California Pritzker Prize recipients, Frank Gehry, FAIA, and Thom Mayne FAIA; to more recently, Anne Fougeron, FAIA (2022), Lorcan O’Herlihy, FAIA (2023), Paulett Taggart, FAIA (2024), and Michael Maltzan, FAIA (2025). Maybeck Award careers demonstrate how design excellence can push boundaries in craft, social impact, and innovation.

The award often highlights architects whose work not only looks great but also addresses real societal and environmental challenges, such as 2022 recipient Angela Brooks, FAIA .

It celebrates architects whose sustained commitment to design excellence has shaped the built environment, influenced peers, and enriched communities over many years.
