Sacramento, Calif.—August 24, 2021– The recipient of the 2021 Maybeck Award is Jonathan Segal, FAIA, of San Diego.

The Maybeck Award, implemented as part of the Design Awards program in 1992 in honor of Bernard Maybeck. The purpose is to recognize exemplary achievement in architectural design by an individual architect over a period of at least ten years.

This year’s jury was comprised of five dynamic voices within the architecture world and included Julie Hiromoto, FAIA; Claire Maxfield; Allison Williams, FAIA; Thomas Robinson, AIA, and Ralph Roesling, FAIA. They unanimously thought Segal more than deserving of this award. “Jonathan has been breaking the mode and charting new ground in terms of what’s possible and doing it himself, which is just what Maybeck did in the context of architecture,” one juror noted.  In their words, Segal has “resurrected the master builder again,” and impressed all with his buildings which could stand up anywhere.

Segal has spent the past 30 years building a visionary architectural practice with his commitment to environmentally conscious urban housing, redevelopment, and education. And he has a unique business model of “Architect as Developer, which ultimately means the architect retains control of the design and development process.

Jurors were also impressed with how Segal has layered development and economics on top of an aesthetic architecture firm. “Segal has spent an incredible amount of time and energy educating the community,” they said, which speaks well of society and a larger sense of collaboration.

He has been the recipient of nearly 100 architectural and career awards. “It is time to recognize {Segal] for his legacy,” said 2020 AIA Gold Medal recipient, Marlon Blackwell, FAIA.

Segal will be honored at the virtual AIA CA Awards Celebration as part of this year’s virtual Monterey Design Conference.
