Sacramento, Calif.—American Institute of Architects, California, (AIA CA) asked the Legislature and Governor Gavin Newsom to make a change to one particular law this year which effects licensed California architects. AB 1010 was recently signed by Gov. Newsom
Net Zero Carbon Continuing Education – Signed Into Law
AB 1010 requires all California architects to complete 5 hours of continuing education (CE) in Net Zero Carbon design every two years, and will be in effect for the 2023 renewal cycle. This CE will help architects understand significant changes that are expected to be included in future building codes and standards, and will help position California architects as the thought leaders in Net Zero Carbon design. AIA CA will supply courses for free to all architects renewing their licenses in 2023.
William Leddy, FAIA, Principal of Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects, and Vice President of AIA CA Climate Action, sees this as a major hurdle passed and believes “the signature of AB 1010 is a major milestone in preparing California’s architects to design a resilient, carbon neutral future for communities across our state.”
This bill was signed one month after AIA CA released their official Declaration of Climate Emergency. “This new law is another example of the bold actions AA CA is taking to rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, helping to meet the advancing challenges of climate change for all Californians,” said Leddy.
