Understanding the Impact of AI

Greetings from the AIA California Office,

The promise of AI in architecture is to “leverage advanced algorithms and data analysis to enhance design processes, optimize construction, and improve overall project efficiency and sustainability.” – Chat GPT

While this sounds optimistic, there are real concerns about job displacement and a loss of creative control: AI will disrupt the design and delivery of architecture by automating routine tasks, enabling rapid prototyping, and shifting traditional roles and workflows.

A recent presentation we hosted featured Cesar Escalante, AIA from Autodesk and Dr. Sam Zolfagharian from Yegatech. They shared their insights into the impact of AI on the AEC industry. While we can see the potential benefits of AI in automation which may improve efficiency, attendees also recognized the fundamental shift this will require – today.

Mathew Gries, AIA an architect in Santa Barbara recently said “We are destined to a role as stewards and less as authors.” This will require a fundamental shift forcing firms to “reset”, focusing on clarity in the language used to feed the AI model.

AIA California recognizes the need for education around AI is tremendous. Beyond, how to craft props to use AIA effectively:

  • How can architects increase their value using AI (ie: be more profitable) using How do we change the compensation model?
  • Case Studies featuring firms that are using AI to inform the design process, operations, and procurement
  • How to ensure ethically sourced data
  • Define “responsible control” of drawings
  • Understandcopyright issues

AIA California is preparing an educational series and already has some AI tools online in the ArchiTECH Toolkit (LINK) and we expect this resource to expand greatly in the near future.

Of course, we don’t have all the answers – no one does at this point – but know that AIA California is working for you to provide education, curate resources, and in the regulatory arena to help you navigate this dramatically changing  landscape.
