Despite the obstacles posed by the harsh climate, the vision of the Summit Complex became one that aligned closely with the petals of the Living Building Challenge, and ultimately certification became a project goal.At the heart of the design response is a bioclimatic design approach, incorporating elements of biomimicry and regenerative design principles to achieve it. Having opened in June 2021 as the highest elevation public building in North America, the project is now open to visitors. As the project team continues to live with the building to measure and optimize performance. The practice of 'Passive House BB' has been designing, building, and monitoring Passive House projects across California for more than a decade. This presentation will provide a high-level review of that journey. It will touch on Passive House basics, then look at how this standard has been integrated into the processes and practices of this firm. A selection of single- and multi- family projects located across California will be used to illustrate specific targets, metrics and details, including early forays into embodied carbon analysis. We'll close with a brief discussion of 'Standard of Care', with a proposal for how architects can choose their own 'standard of care' to include outcomes well beyond the currently narrow legal definition of this term.
