2022 CA Energy Code Breaker: Outdoor Lighting

Virtual

California’s 2022 Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24, Part 6 or the Energy Code) requirements for outdoor lighting wattage allowances and controls depends not only on building type, but also scope of work (such as New Construction versus Alterations). In this one-hour presentation, we will review outdoor lighting requirements for single-family, multifamily, nonresidential, hotel and motel building types of all applicable scopes of work and what compliance documentation is required for each project type. Speaker: Gina Griffiths Rodda, CEA, LEED AP | Principal/Owner | Gabel Energy Gina Griffiths Rodda, CEA, LEED AP

California State of the Market

Virtual

2024: A Year of Stabilization and Reset. California’s economic performance has lagged national performance for the last few years – technology sector layoffs, regional banking crises, and the exodus of a significant portion of the workforce to other states have taken its toll. However, home sales are tentatively rebounding and the population grew in 2023, halting three years of decline. As California continues its path to economic recovery, this session takes a closer look at trends in construction and development, real estate supply and demand signals, emerging trends, and demographic shifts amidst volatility. We will also discuss what the future holds for different market sectors across the state. Study Hub: Project Development & Documentation (PDD)

Virtual

Study Hub is AIA California’s pathway for emerging professionals to study and pursue licensure. These statewide ARE study sessions and virtual study groups serve as a hub for education, connection, and community. This portal does not replace other study materials or resources, rather it supplements them, serving as a network and allowing for collaboration between EPs and AIA professionals across California. Project Development & Documentation (PDD) focuses on the integration and documentation of building systems, material selection, and material assemblies into a project. You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of and abilities in integration of civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and specialty systems into overall project design and documentation. Speaker: Elif Bayram

Existing Buildings: Getting to Success with the Building Code Including the new CEBC Work Area Method

Virtual

Reuse and retrofit of existing buildings is a key climate action strategy.  When these projects create new housing from underused or empty commercial buildings, it’s a win-win: Major embodied carbon benefits for greenhouse gas emission reductions Urban revitalization and economic development Housing in locations where it’s critically needed There are five different compliance paths that California architects have available for work on existing buildings.  This program will provide a high-level overview of all code options, insights, and information to make an informed code choice.  It will also provide a deep dive into the Work Area Methodology, new to California as of July 1, 2024.  Join architect Michael F. Malinowski, FAIA for this fast-paced exploration of code choices and nuanced differences and learn about factors that can lead you to a code ‘best fit’ for your next existing building adventure. Note: This program targets design professionals with a basic familiarity of building code principles, terminology and the application of codes to building design. Speaker: Michael F. Best Practices for Utilizing Good Acoustics, Daylighting and Sustainability in Modern School Design

Virtual

During this one-hour lunch and learn, we will discuss the best practices in modern school design, like utilizing good acoustics, daylighting and sustainability related to Roof & Floor Deck Ceiling Systems that you can use at your firm. The Art and Science of structural deck engineering discussed can enable a designer to create unique, visually open public spaces with responsible materials and unmatched acoustic. Attendees will learn - amongst other things - about the importance of good acoustical design, the benefits of natural daylighting and how acoustical metal deck ceiling systems can contribute, and the sustainability factors in acoustical metal deck ceiling systems specifically in the learning environment. Roadmap to Absolute Zero Carbon

Virtual

This session qualifies for 1 LU|HSW (pending approval) and 1 hr Zero Net Carbon Design Mandatory Continuing Education. (Live webinar attendees only) As the urgency to address climate change and halt greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) continues to grow, designers have a responsibility to make smart design decisions to minimize their buildings’ GHG emissions. Even net zero energy, looking at operational energy over time, is no longer enough. We need to be absolute zero carbon, this means zero carbon in all aspects: operational, embodied, refrigerants, construction, infrastructure, and landscape. We need to design buildings that are zero carbon every day, from conception to operations. This session will discuss the roadmap to achieving Absolute Carbon including radically passive, all-electric design, adaptive reuse that is as good as new construction, 24/7 renewable energy, carbon sequestering materials, rehabilitating developed landscapes and serious attention to transportation. Moderator: David Moore, LEED AP BD+C, Environmental Designer, Atelier Ten               Speaker: Kristen DiStefano, LEED AP BD+C - Director, Atelier Ten, San Francisco
